It has understandably gone viral. For a female student who currently spends five to eight thousand rupees every month on rickshaws, vans, and buses just to reach campus, this sounds almost too good to be true.
So let us separate the hype from the facts. The scheme is real. It is the CM Punjab E-Bike Scheme, launched under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and it genuinely puts a brand new electric bike within reach of students on tiny monthly installments. This guide gives you the honest picture and, most importantly, walks you through exactly how to apply. Update, September 2026: the scheme just got much bigger
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a major expansion, with more than 125,000 electric bikes now planned for students across Punjab. She has directed authorities to open the application portal this week and personally rejected any proposal to charge students a down payment or any fee beyond the monthly installment. The rest of this guide reflects the current, expanded scheme.
What exactly is the CM Punjab E-Bike Scheme?
It is a Punjab government student welfare program run in partnership with the Bank of Punjab (BOP). The government provides a large subsidy and covers the interest (markup) and, under the latest expansion, the insurance too, so eligible students can get a brand new electric or petrol bike and pay it off in small, interest free monthly installments over about 2 years. After the final installment, the bike is legally yours.
The whole point is simple: with petrol above Rs 320 per litre, daily travel has become a serious burden for students. This scheme lets you own your own reliable transport without paying a huge amount upfront and without any bank interest piling on top.
Is it really only for girls? The honest answer
This is the part everyone gets confused about, so let us be clear. The scheme is not exclusively for female students. It is open to all eligible students in Punjab. However, and this is why it has become such big news for girls, a significant portion of the bikes is reserved specifically for women.
- Around 25 percent of the bikes are reserved for female students to support their mobility and independence.
- Female applicants, especially those without any family vehicle, are often given special priority.
- There are also reserved quotas for rural students (around 30 percent), students with disabilities, and minorities.
Bottom line: if you are a female student in Punjab, your chances are genuinely strong because of the reserved quota and priority. But male students can and do apply too, and the latest expansion explicitly covers both. Do not let the viral "girls only" caption stop you from applying either way.
How much will you actually pay per month?
This is the number everyone wants. Based on the current, expanded scheme, here is the realistic picture. Treat these as reference figures and always confirm the exact amount for your chosen bike model on the official portal.
- Electric bikes: around Rs 3,000 per month under the latest approved structure. This is close to the viral "around two thousand a month" figure people have been sharing, and it remains an affordable, subsidized rate.
- Duration: around 2 years (24 months) of installments, after which you own the bike outright.
- Interest: zero. The government covers the markup, so you only pay back the actual subsidized price of the bike.
- Insurance: covered by the Punjab government under the latest expansion, at no extra cost to you.
- Down payment: none. The Chief Minister has specifically directed that students should not be charged any down payment or any fee beyond the monthly installment. If anyone asks you for money upfront to secure your application, that is not part of the official scheme.
The electric bikes under the expanded scheme use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, the same chemistry used in many modern electric vehicles for its safety and longer working life.
Who can apply? (Eligibility)
The exact rules can be tightened between phases, so check the portal for the current criteria. Generally, to apply you should:
- Be a permanent resident of Punjab (Punjab domicile).
- Be 18 years or older. For students, the usual range is 18 to 25 years.
- Be enrolled in a recognized college or university in Punjab.
- Have a valid CNIC or B-Form.
- Have a learner's permit or motorcycle driving license (required before the bike is finally delivered, so start arranging this early).
- Be able to pay the monthly installment reliably for the full term.

- Click "Apply Online" or "Register" and enter your CNIC and mobile number.
- Verify your mobile number (it must be registered in your own name).
- Fill in your personal and student details carefully.
- Choose your bike preference: electric or petrol. (For long term savings, electric is usually the smarter pick.)
- Upload the required documents, making sure every scan is clear and readable.
- Double check everything, then submit. You will receive a Tracking ID, so save it.
- Wait for the Bank of Punjab verification and the balloting result.

How selection works: the balloting
Because thousands of students apply but the number of bikes is limited, selection is done through a transparent electronic balloting (a public digital draw) held under government supervision. It works roughly like this:
- Applications are first checked for eligibility and correct documents.
- A computerised draw then selects applicants, keeping the reserved quotas (women, rural, disabled) in mind.
- Shortlisted students are notified by SMS and on the portal.
- Selected students visit the Bank of Punjab with their original documents to complete verification.
- Once selected, the Chief Minister has directed that students receive their bike within six weeks.
Because it is a draw and not first come first served, applying early does not guarantee selection, but a complete and correct application makes sure you are actually in the running.
Important: protect yourself from scams
Whenever a scheme goes viral, the scammers come out too. Keep yourself safe:
- Apply only through the official portal (bikes.punjab.gov.pk). Ignore random "registration links" on social media.
