Smog Is Back, and This Year Your Bike Will Be Checked
Smog season has arrived early in Punjab. On 19 October 2026, Punjab EPA data showed Shahdara in Lahore at an AQI of 500, the hazardous level, with Lahore overall at 185. A few days earlier, Lahore crossed 228 and Rawalpindi climbed to 163 near industrial areas.
The government is not just warning people this time. On 7 October, Punjab Traffic Police banned smoke-emitting vehicles from the roads and set up joint checkpoints with the Environmental Protection Agency. The same directive says all vehicles, including motorcycles, must have working headlights, rear lights, fog lights and indicators. Punjab has also expanded vehicle emission testing.
For bikers, that means two things. A smoky or half-lit bike can now be stopped. And riding in thick smog and fog with no cabin, no wipers and weak lights is genuinely dangerous. The good news: the right mods are cheap, legal and quick to fit.
The 10 Best Smog Season Mods
1. Fix the smoke first (the most important "mod")
If your bike leaves a blue or black trail, it is now a target at every checkpoint. Blue smoke usually means worn piston rings or valve seals burning oil. Black smoke usually means a rich carburettor, a choked air filter or a wrong jet. A proper tuning and carburettor clean often solves black smoke for a few hundred rupees. Blue smoke needs a mechanic to check the rings. Either way, fixing it saves fuel too.
2. Fresh, original-size air filter
Smog season means extra dust and soot. A choked filter makes the engine run rich, smoke more and lose mileage. Replace it with a good quality filter of the original size. Avoid open "pod" filters on a daily commuter: they let more dust into the engine and usually make the bike run worse, not better.
3. LED headlight bulb (the right kind)
The stock bulb on many 70cc and 125cc bikes is weak in fog. A quality LED bulb in white or warm white, fitted in the original reflector and aimed slightly down, gives far better visibility. Make sure your bike's wiring and regulator can handle it, and never aim it high, because it blinds oncoming riders in fog.
4. Yellow or white fog lights, mounted low
Fog lights are now on the traffic police checklist. A small pair of fog lamps mounted low on the crash guard or front fork lights the road under the fog rather than bouncing off it. Yellow light cuts through fog and smog better for many riders. Fit them with a separate switch so you only use them when visibility is poor.
5. Bright LED tail light and brake light
In thick smog, cars behind you often see your tail light before they see you. A bright LED tail and brake light, in red only, is one of the cheapest life-saving upgrades on this list.
6. Working amber indicators
Broken or missing indicators are one of the most common faults on Pakistani commuter bikes. Replace dead bulbs or fit LED indicators in amber. They are part of the required lights in the October directive.
7. Reflective tape on the bike, helmet and bag
Strips of reflective tape on the rear mudguard, the sides, your helmet and your bag make you visible from much further away when headlights hit you. The directive already makes reflective tape compulsory on loaders and commercial vehicles. On a bike it costs very little and makes a big difference.
8. Anti-fog visor or Pinlock insert
Your visor fogging up from the inside on a cold smoggy morning is as dangerous as the smog outside. An anti-fog visor or a Pinlock insert keeps it clear. Use a clear visor in the evening and at night, never a dark tinted one.
9. Proper mask under the helmet
Motorcyclists breathe smog directly with no cabin filter. News reports this month advised riders to wear masks, preferably N95 respirators, when pollution is high. Choose one that fits snugly and does not fog your visor. A cloth scarf alone does not stop fine particles.
10. Hand guards or handlebar muffs
Cold, numb fingers react slowly on the brake lever. Hand guards or padded handlebar muffs keep wind off your hands and are a common winter upgrade for daily riders.
Check your battery before adding lights
Extra lights draw extra power. If your bike's battery is old or the regulator is weak, the lights will dim at idle and the battery can die on a cold morning. Get the charging system checked when you fit new lights.

Mods That Will Get Your Bike Stopped
Some popular "upgrades" do the opposite of what this season needs. Avoid these:
- Open or hollow silencers: more noise, more smoke and an easy reason to be stopped at a checkpoint.
- Blue, flashing or multi-colour lights: these look like emergency lights and are not allowed on private bikes.
- High-aimed or unshielded HID and LED bars: they blind oncoming traffic, which is dangerous in fog.
- Red or white lights on the wrong end: white must face forward, red must face back.
- Removed mirrors or indicators: a "clean look" that fails the basic lights check.
- Dark tinted visors at night: you lose most of your vision in smog.

Riding Tips for Smog and Fog
- Slow down and keep double your normal distance from the vehicle ahead.
- Use low beam plus fog lights in thick fog. High beam reflects back and blinds you.
- Avoid the worst hours. Smog and fog are usually thickest late at night and early morning.
- Plan extra time on the GT Road. Bikes are not allowed on motorways, and when motorways close in dense fog, more traffic shifts onto the GT Road and other highways.
- Check the AQI on the Punjab EPA website before long rides, and wear your mask when it is high.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are fog lights legal on motorcycles in Pakistan?
Yes. In fact, Punjab Traffic Police's October 2026 directive says all vehicles, including motorcycles, should have working headlights, rear lights, fog lights and indicators. Keep them low, aimed down, and switch them off when visibility is clear.
Can my bike be stopped for smoke?
Yes. Punjab has banned smoke-emitting vehicles from the roads during smog season and set up joint checkpoints with the EPA. Fix blue or black smoke before you ride.
Are LED headlights allowed?
White or warm white LED bulbs in the original headlight are generally fine. Avoid blue tints, flashing modes and high-aimed light bars that blind other road users.
What is the best mask for riding in smog?
A well-fitted N95 respirator, worn under your helmet. Cloth masks and scarves do not stop the fine particles in smog.
Which mod should I do first?
Fix any smoke and make sure your headlight, tail light, brake light and indicators all work. Those keep you legal. Then add fog lights, reflective tape and an anti-fog visor for safety.
The Bottom Line
This smog season, the best mods are not the loudest or the flashiest. A bike that does not smoke, with bright working lights, a clear visor and a rider wearing a proper mask, is legal at every checkpoint and far safer on a white, foggy road. Spend a few thousand rupees now and ride through the season with confidence.
